New year resolutions 2019

Published on: December 27th 2018

It is almost time for the "new year new me" bullshit.

Haha. Here are the things that I will achieve in 2019.

  1. Develop Golang Expertise: Although I know a fair bit of Go, I have been writing just JavaScript for almost a year now. This has developed a kind of an "on-the-fly" approach in me as JavaScript is not a type-safe language. Currently my go-to choice for back-end is NodeJS but by the end of 2019, it will be Golang. I am choosing Go because I already write Go, the focus for the year is to develop best practices and understand the reasons behind them.
  2. Learn to write proper tests: I must admit this. I absolutely suck at writing good tests. This is a fundamental problem not just in programming, but in any kind of problem solving. There is a high chance that your code will break at some point during iteration if you aren't writing exhaustive tests. Especially on the JavaScript side of things, tests are really important because the language itself is prone to run-time errors because of the lack of type system. The goal is to understand the fundamental philosophy of testing and learn Jasmine, Jest and Golang testing
  3. Attain mastery at CSS: This is going to be hard to do because CSS is vast and one needs to do it regularly to understand and remember all of it. Currently I do most of my CSS using flexbox. The goal is to be able to do anything and everything with CSS so that I can call my self An Independent Fullstack Developer.
  4. Travel more: By the end of 2019, I will have visited most of the beautiful places in and around Karnataka. By beautiful, I mean the things that I find beautiful. Don't expect me to visit newly made temples that the world qualifies as tourist destinations. Travelling, IMO, is a great way for spiritual discoveries. It is hard to think about think out of the box if you are living in the box.
  5. Attain 8% body fat: This is sad, but true. I have been working out for almost three years now and the leanest I have gotten is till 12% body fat. 12% body fat looks okay, but you can't qualify it to be a beach body. Currently I am at 17% body fat after a 2 month bulk and I will be at 8% body fat by May 27th, 2019.

There are some more things I wish to accomplish, like reading more, waking up at 5AM everyday, meditating, blah, blah. But I know I will not do all this, so parking it till I reach those levels of descipline.
